Canela’s story is one of strength, resilience, and second chances. Once used as a guard dog and kept on a short chain for two long years, this beautiful red girl has finally learned what it means to be loved — and she’s thriving.
Now a proud graduate of dog school, Canela has transformed into a calm, social, and affectionate companion. She’s kennel trained, potty trained, and off-leash trained, and she knows all her commands — sit, stay, down, come. Her trainers describe her as sweet, intelligent, and perfectly behaved.
Canela enjoys moderate daily exercise (about 40 minutes) and is equally happy lounging beside her person afterward. She’s great with male dogs but prefers to be the only female dog in the home — and she’s definitely not a fan of cats.
After everything she’s been through, Canela is more than ready to trade rescue life for real life — one filled with love, comfort, and belonging.
💛 If you’re looking for a loyal, well-trained companion with a heart of gold, Canela is waiting for you.
History: Sadly this beautiful girl was used as a guard dog and spent 2 years on a short chain with no attention.
Health: 03/22/24 Canela had surgery to remove the plate in her leg (from an old fracture) as it was causing some pain. She has a slight limp but it does not slow her down one bit.
Before leaving Cortez Rescue, all dogs will be given a full medical assessment to ensure optimum health, current on vaccinations, and spayed/neutered. All dogs are micro-chipped before leaving Mexico.
