Meet Ukie – A Work in Progress with a Whole Lot of Heart

Ukie is a beautiful, spirited dog who’s deeply bonded to her brother — the two are absolutely inseparable. They sleep, play, eat, and even head into the kennel together. That connection is strong and has been since they were puppies.

Ukie is a cuddler with those she knows and trusts, especially her people at home. She's incredibly loyal and loving once that bond is built.

That said, Ukie has some behavioral challenges we’re actively working on. She’s very wary of strangers — both people and animals — and can be reactive when she feels unsafe or out of control. She’s also a bit of an escape artist, and despite many efforts, she’s managed to find her way out of the yard more than once. We're exploring new solutions, like a taller gate, to help keep her secure.

Ukie still needs work on house training and learning to trust the world beyond her immediate circle. She’s not an easy dog, but she’s deeply loved by her foster family. She’s a full-time commitment, but we’re committed to helping her grow and work through some of her issues so that she can find her own loving family.

With patience, boundaries, and someone willing to work consistently on her socialization, Ukie has the potential to thrive. She’s a handful — but she’s worth it.

Foster Update: This sweet 6-month-old girl has stolen our hearts. She's playful, loving, and smart, but she's also quite timid, especially around men. We've had Ukie for over five weeks, and while she's starting to trust me, she still gets nervous around my husband. It’s quite the contradiction: she snuggles up to him every morning and night but barks when he walks in during the day. Ukie deserves a better life! She is going to need a very special person/family and would be better with another dog.

This litter of 3 was dumped in an arroyo and were rescued by two good Samaritans.

Before leaving Cortez Rescue, all dogs will be given a full medical assessment to ensure optimum health, current on vaccinations, and spayed/neutered. All dogs are microchipped before leaving Mexico.
