Meet Omelia – Small, Spirited, and Full of Heart 🐾💛

Omelia may be a small pup, but she has a big personality and plenty of spirit. She’s curious, alert, and incredibly resilient — a little dog with a lot of determination.

Omelia has some medical history and it's important we share what we know. Please refer to the Medical Special Needs Note below. She’ll need a family willing to continue her care and provide the consistency she thrives on. Despite her medical needs, she’s a bright, loving puppy who deserves a safe and understanding home.

If you’re looking for a special pup with a courageous heart, Omelia may be the perfect match. She’s waiting for someone who sees past her size and her challenges — and appreciates the wonderful little dog she is.

Medical Special Needs Note

Sweet, adorable, and delightfully sassy, Omelia is a medical special-needs girl — although you’d truly never know it. She has a seizure disorder that is well managed with medication and does beautifully day to day.

Omelia was a healthy, typical puppy until shortly after receiving her final round of vaccines, when she experienced seizure-like episodes and required hospitalization. Testing revealed parvo, giardia, and other infections, all of which were treated. During this time, she had another seizure and was started on anti-seizure medication (Levetiracetam/Keppra), which she currently takes three times daily.

A trial to transition her to a once-daily medication was unsuccessful, and she was returned to her original medication schedule. Since then, Omelia has remained completely stable with no further seizures.

Veterinary consensus is that Omelia has idiopathic seizures, a common diagnosis meaning there is no identifiable underlying cause. With her medication, she is thriving and enjoying life just like any other happy pup — playful, affectionate, and full of personality.

What This Means for Her Forever Home

Omelia will most likely remain on anti-seizure medication for the rest of her life. She cannot take oral flea and tick preventatives such as Bravecto, NexGard, or Simparica due to seizure risk and instead requires a topical option like Advantage.

Extra care should be taken with annual booster vaccines. Her adopter should discuss running vaccine titers with their veterinarian, as Omelia may not need boosters as frequently if adequate antibody levels are present.

Omelia’s condition is manageable and does not define her — she’s simply a happy, loving dog looking for the right person to call her own.

Before leaving Cortez Rescue: All dogs will be given a full medical assessment to ensure optimum health, current on vaccinations, and spayed/neutered. All dogs are micro-chipped before leaving Mexico.
