Foster Update: Shatner is a beautiful brindle boy who is affectionate and playful with lots of personality. He is a nice pup who shows no aggression toward humans or dogs. We introduced him to the neighbor’s dog, and they played well together (as seen in his photos). He walks well on leash, rides well in a car, came potty trained somehow, and doesn't bark. He doesn’t seem to be very needy but will come over for a little petting and then walk away. In the short time we have had him, we have taught him to sit, stay and to sit and wait for his dinner until we say "okay." Although very food motivated, he does not beg while we are eating.
Until he came here a few weeks ago, Shatner had not left the rescue since he was brought in with his siblings 9 months ago. He is doing very well having never been in a home before. He is, of course, curious about everything but listens well to guidance when he is doing something he shouldn’t. He would do fine in a home with another dog, especially if they are an alpha. He does have a bit of a prey drive so small animals might not be ideal. He also does not like to be left alone.
Shatner’s mother was rescued by a good Samaritan when she sought refuge from the booming sound of fireworks. Once rescued, she gave birth to 9 puppies. The rescuer fed them for 4 months and then brought them to CR in order to help them find homes. Shatner is the last pup left from his litter to be adopted, all were known for their gentleness and charm.
Watch my video on how I interact with cats! (Disclaimer: As part of our dedication to the welfare of all animals under our care, we conduct basic cat testing for dogs brought into our rescue. However, it's essential to understand that while we strive to assess their compatibility with cats, we cannot guarantee their behavior in all situations.)
Before leaving Cortez Rescue, all dogs will be given a full medical assessment to ensure optimum health, current on vaccinations, and desexed. All dogs are microchipped before leaving Mexico.
